oneROOF Youth Services Prevention & Diversion:

Family Reconnect

Family Reconnect and Host Homes work collaboratively under the Prevention & Diversion umbrella here at oneROOF Youth Services to prevent youth from entering the shelter system and divert them away from the cycle of homelessness. The following information pertains to Family Reconnect.

What is Family Reconnect?

Family Reconnect staff work with youth in our emergency shelter and around Waterloo Region as a Prevention & Diversion program. The Family Reconnect staff offer support and advocacy for youth and those they consider family, to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships.

#DidYouKnow the biggest driver of youth homelessness is breakdown of the family?

Family relationships can play an essential role in both preventing and ending the experience of homelessness among young people. Family Reconnect staff support youth currently in shelter or in Waterloo Region to work through family conflict and establish healthy relationships and communication. Staff provide ongoing support to both youth and family members in the form of mediation, goal planning, advocacy, and referrals. Even when returning to a family home is not an option, having a strong support network while navigating independent living can be vital to long term success for youth.
